Executive Summary :

Mid-sized cities in the Indian context are growing in population and numbers and witnessing rapid economic development. In such mid-sized Indian city sprawls, structures for dwelling and business are built close to the roadway having narrow carriageway and rising vehicular population. People living in these structures are exposed to the effects of noise pollution due to traffic operation and community reactions are showing up in their collective demand for better living, necessitating technological understanding of the issue and solutions. The proposal envisages developing noise propagation model on the horizontal and vertical scale for mixed traffic operation in three mid-sized cities of Kanpur, Varanasi and Gorakhpur having similar geophysical road transport apparatus and noise enviroscape. Field data shall be utilized for developing mitigation model for various barrier types which shall be useful tool for town planners and town planning agencies to decide location of various landuse. Outcome of the work shall serve as an aid for Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) studies.
