Objective:To arrive at policy level decisions on transportation infrastructure for any city, it is essential for the road owning agencies to formulate travel demand management (TDM) strategies by considering the base and horizon year traffic plying in the candidate city. Till date there is no manual or guideline is available for the country towards the readymade estimation of trips based on the evolved per capita trip rates covering various modes and land use characteristics. Considering the above research gap in the literature, systematic approach based on Per capita Trip Rate (PCTR) for Indian cities is very much essential which can ultimately aid in evolving suitable TDM policies. Summary: To arrive at policy level decisions on transportation infrastructure for any city, it is essential for the road owning agencies to formulate travel demand management (TDM) strategies by considering the base and horizon year traffic plying in the candidate city. The vital step in preparing the TDM strategies while considering the base and horizon year traffic flows is to estimate the number of trips produced by various modes accounting for public transit trips (by also considering the share of Intermediate Para Transit trips separately) as well as private transport trips covering various land uses. The eventual outcome of this research endeavour is oriented towards the per capita trip rates (PCTR) by considering varying population size in different first and second order metropolitan cities of the country. PCTR thus evolved can serve as readymade tool for the local engineers and planners towards taking desired transportation infrastructure augmentation. However, till date there is no manual or guideline is available for the country towards the readymade estimation of trips based on the evolved per capita trip rates covering various modes. Considering the above research gap in the literature, systematic approach based on PCTR for Indian cities is very much essential which can ultimately aid in evolving suitable TDM policies. |
