Executive Summary :

Molecular communication (MolCom) is an evolving area of research in which the information between transmitter and receiver is exchanged through propagation of molecules. MolCom is an interdisciplinary field which requires the background of the physics, communications engineering, chemical engineering and statistical signal processing to explore the natural MolCom ubiquitously present in nature. Recently, IEEE Communications society (http://mbmc.committees.comsoc.org/) has formed the technical committee and established a formal standard for MolCom (https://standards.ieee.org/standard/1906_1-2015.html). In the recent past, many opportunities for communication engineering have emerged to participate in this field to contribute to revolutionary applications. However, exploring the MolCom area requires knowledge from broad areas of communication engineering, biophysics, statistical signal processing and biochemistry and thus becomes a challenging task. Due to these challenges, there are many open research problems which are yet to be attempted. Moreover, designing the testbed and demonstrating the MolCom systems are still in their infant stage as far as the applications of this area are concerned. This project aims to demonstrate the MolCom through an indigenous testbed and to show few use cases for solving the real world challenges like drunk driving, pollution monitoring, etc. This project also plans to design and characterize biosensors with communication abilities along with development of mathematical and simulation frameworks for analyzing the performance of MolCom systems.
