Executive Summary : | The Aravalli mountain range faces numerous threats, including illegal mining, urbanization, encroachment, deforestation, habitat loss, invasive species, and water scarcity, which are affecting the habitat and population of endangered species like leopards. Leopards are categorized as vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss, poaching, and conflict with humans. Most leopard studies have been limited to a few habitats and sites in India, with limited understanding of their ecology, behavior, and interaction with humans. This study will be conducted in Rajasthan's Jaisamand wildlife sanctuary to address four major aspects of leopards: density, diet, human-leopard interaction, and suitable habitat mapping. The study will use capture-recapture methods, Scat analysis, and data on livestock depredation and leopard attacks on humans to understand leopard prey preferences and identify conflict-prone areas. Leopards are crucial for maintaining ecosystem balance, and understanding factors influencing their populations and habitat use is essential for developing effective conservation strategies. Understanding leopard behavior and movement can also help reduce conflicts with humans. |
