Executive Summary :

The life expectancy of the BRICS countries has increased from 50-60 years to 70-80 years in the last five decades, leading to a rise in the demand for long-lasting orthopaedic implants. This has led to a need for materials that can meet this demand and avoid revision surgery. The project aims to design and evaluate titanium-based alloys with reduced stress-shielding effects, including surface modification for enhanced osteointegration in dental applications. The secondary goals include processing the alloys, defining ECAP parameters, studying bulk properties, processing surface treatment, evaluating surface characterization, studying in vitro biocompatibility, and studying invivo biocompatibility in animal models. The project will deliver technology for developing nanostructured Ti alloys with a surface that induces osteogensis for bone growth and blood compatibility, joint publications, student training, workshops, and collaborations with key laboratories in the BRICS countries. The project has potential biomedical applications in dental and orthopedic implants, such as hip, knee, and maxillofacial implants.
