Executive Summary :

Chitinase, glycosyl hydrolases that convert chitin into low molecular weight chitooligosaccharides (COs), have numerous bioactivities and are used in biocontrol of fungal phytopathogens and harmful insects. However, the commercial applicability of chitinase in COs generation and against phytopathogens is still in its infancy. This study aims to explore marine fungi capable of producing high titers of extracellular chitinase and improve their titer. The study also focuses on synthesizing efficient nanomaterials for immobilization of chitinase and COs and their efficacy against phytopathogens. The hypothesis is that exploring marine fungi can result in a novel hyperactive chitinase with better stability at elevated temperatures and pH. This can be achieved through recombinant DNA technology, statistical optimization, and a one-pot strategy of simultaneous microbial treatment of chitin and chitinase production. The purified chitinase can be used for COs production and to suppress phytopathogens. The study will generate new knowledge and process innovation to overcome issues in chitin research by developing efficient bioprocesses for chitinase and COs production.
