Executive Summary :

Water in the earth is getting depleted, demand for water is increasing and generation wastewater quantity is getting increased day by day. Due to the realization that water has become a prevailing source of concern and is a precious natural resource, more attention is placed on its maintenance and purification. Environmental pollution increases day by day due to industrial activities which is a worldwide problem. Industries are polluting the environment directly or indirectly. The rapid development and industrialization in India increased the discharge of contaminated wastewater into discharging water bodies. Air, water, land, living organisms, plants, animals etc. get affected due to pollution generated through industrial discharge. When industrial wastewater is discharged in water stream, it is dangerous to aquatic life and human beings. Textile industries are one of the major sources of water pollution. Textile industry produces large amounts of effluents that are not amenable to chemical or biological treatment. High content of dyestuffs, surfactants and additives, generally organic compounds of complex structures, causes non-biodegradability of industrial textile wastewater. Indeed, textile dyes themselves present low or any biodegradability. Well established technologies are available for treatment of carbon and its derivatives from wastewater in recent years. The issue of removal of nitrogen from wastewater is now a topic of concern. The ultimate goal is to protect the environment by producing cheap, efficient and long lasting solutions to wastewater treatment pertaining to removal of nitrogen in the presence and absence of carbon derivatives. The common effluent treatment plants (CETP), which treats the carbon based pollutants in the secondary treatment plant neglect the removal of nitrogen derivatives, which becomes a thread to the environment. And it becomes very tedious and lengthy process to remove the Ammoniacal nitrogen in the absence of carbon. The present project proposal commits to address the problem concern with Ammoniacal nitrogen removal in the presence and absence of carbon derivatives. The proposed methodology of the research work will be done in the following manner. Samples will be collected from specified industries of Ahmedabad and preliminary investigations and characterisation will be done as per Indian Standard Procedures. Different combination of nitrification and denitrification by electrochemical process will be carriedout; nitrification by Electrooxidation method and denitrification by electro-reduction mean; nitrification by electro-reduction and denitrification by Electrooxidation mean will be investigated to derive the effective removal process to achieve maximum removal in short duration. The efficiency, cost and cause relationship can be calculated.
