Executive Summary :

This proposal attempts to elucidate the molecular mechanism downstream of Wnt signaling that is critical for joint cartilage development and maintenance. Successful execution of this proposal will not only uncover some longstanding questions in the field of joint cartilage development but is also likely to open up novel approaches for treating osteoarthritis.

Achievements :

1- Identified the first transcription factors capable of inducing joint cartilage formation. Also proposed a mechanism for co-ordination of transient and permanent cartilage differentiation. 2 – Solved a six decade old problem where we uncovered the molecular basis for loss of molecular property of joint cartilage upon immobilization of an embryo.
