Executive Summary :

Monitoring rock-concrete joints is crucial for foundations on rock slopes and concrete sockets in incompetent rocks, as it helps ensure the stability and safety of the foundation and overall structure. The rock-concrete joint is the interface between a concrete socket or pile and the surrounding rock, which may develop stresses and strains over time. Over time, rocks are subjected to weathering, displacements, and changes in loads, which can weaken the rock-concrete joint and compromise the stability of the overlying structure. This study proposes a piezo-based local sensing technique capable of identifying microstructural changes at the rock-concrete interface. Tests will be conducted on both intact rock and a group of rocks depicting a rock mass. A borehole will be prepared in the rock, filled with concrete and scaled reinforcement. A thin lead zirconium titanate (PZT) patch will be embedded as a sensing element in the concrete, and an impedance analyzer will sense the recorded response as a function of the frequency of vibration. Any changes, such as cracks in the surrounding rocks or loosening of the concrete sockets, will result in a quantifiable change in the EMI signature. surface scanning techniques have been used to identify changes in foundation on slopes, but they have not been effective due to surface vegetation and inaccessible locations. Regular monitoring of the rock-concrete joint is essential for critical structures, especially those of national importance, to detect unanticipated displacements or early slippage at the foundation level. This allows for timely action such as grouting, reinforcing the foundation, or altering the load on the foundation to prevent sudden failures.
