Executive Summary :

Operation of the power systems is more and more enabled by phasor measurement units (PMUs) providing a wealth of data and controlled by disparate systems. The PMUs utilises global positioning system (GPS) to provide more frequent, accurate, and reliable synchronised measurements in the transmission grids, enabling the implementation of wide-area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC) over high-speed communication networks. There is a need for continuous, online monitoring of power system signals in order to precisely classify the disturbance type and possibly identify the source of the disturbance. Advancements in remote signal measurement via PMUs have dramatically increased the availability of transient events for analysis. However, there is a concern from huge amount of PMUs data flow in efficiently extracting the useful information for events characterization. An accurate algorithm on event diagnosis can help to interpret amount of control action required in real-time. The cyber-integration introduces new challenges. Most of the devices installed in the power systems/network are not designed with sufficient security features against malignant events, particularly from the cyberspace. Tremendous threats arise from the attacker's ability to launch intrigue, remote, simultaneous, and/or coordinated attacks from the cyberspace. The attack schemes can be on generation, transmission, distribution, electricity markets, etc.The project will consider practical real-time solution for resilient, secured and control in Indian grid system considering specific risk associated scenarios/conditions. For e.g. there is a challenge to ensure reliable and secured operations at the time of incidental failure (physical disturbance/event) or cyber threat. Thus, the work packages in the proposal are framed to ensure reliable and secure operations against cyber threat and accidental failures/events. The study in this proposal is divided into four work packages (WP) with Tasks (given in attached file) as given below: WP1: Detection of cyber attack and its impact on the grid system WP2: Data mining of grid signals for event diagnosis WP3: Control algorithms for improved security and resilience WP4: Cyber-physical environment test bed (in real-time) Each WP has Tasks defined describing exactly the study (specific objectives) to be carried out. The PI/Co-PIs have their specific role/responsibility on these WPs. The project will be carried out in the Department of Electrical Engineering, MNNIT Allahabad. Some Tasks in WP4 will be part of work scheduled at IIT Kanpur.
