Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose founded a leading organisation of the nation, Bose Institute, in 1917 with an intention for the advancement of science and diffusion of knowledge. The Asia's first modern research centre devoted to interdisciplinary research and bears a century old tradition of research excellence. Since inception, the Institute has been visited by numerous stalwarts, such as writers like Aldous Huxley (1926) and heads of foreign states like President Brezhnev of USSR (1959). Over the decades, Nobel laureates from many countries like Neils Bohr, Paul Crutzen, Richard Ernst, Sir Anthony Leggett, Harald zur Hausen, Sir Richard Roberts etc. have visited the Institute. The Institute is in the service of the nation for the last 75 years through its pursuit of advancement of knowledge in science and technology and by producing efficient and skilled scientific manpower that the country needs for its development. The institute caters to this need through six departments (Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biophysics), two sections (Plant Molecular Cellular Genetics and Animal Physiology ), and through other service centers like RSIC, DIC, Library, Workshop, etc. Over the last century, the Institute has endlessly strived to preserve the legacy of its illustrious founder. Scientists of the Institute have won many laurels in form of S.S. Bhatnagar Prize, fellowship of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) as well as fellowships of all national science academies in India. In addition, many of them have been conferred INSA young scientist award, Rockefeller Foundation fellowship, Nehru fellowship, K.S. Krishnan fellowship, Homi Bhabha fellowship etc. Members of the Institute have also been leaders in science popularisation and have won the highest literary awards in Bengali, namely the Rabindra Puraskar and the Ananda Puraskar. A large number of Institute alumni are reputed experts in their fields.
