National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), Noida

National Institute of Cancer prevention and research (NICPR) was granted national status in 2016 acknowledging its mandate and contributions towards cancer prevention. The institute caters to prevention of prevalent cancers in the country. The thrust areas of institute include pre-cancer and cancers of the uterine cervix, breast and oral cancers. The institute introduced the concept of clinical downstaging, visual inspection of cervix with selective cytology screening and development of novel diagnostic approaches for HPV and other oncogenes for screening and early detection of cervical cancer. Other major research areas include preparatory work on India specific HPV vaccine and analysis of breast cancer susceptibility genes. The NICPR has been instrumental in the formulation of “Operational Framework Document” for cancer screening and management, recently released by MOHFW, which has been designed to carry out population based screening in 100 districts of India using cost-effective screening tools. An India-specific web portal (http://cancerindia.org.in/) has been designed to provide comprehensive knowledge to the general public on prevalent cancers in our country.

Output & Achievements

  • 1. Health Promotion Clinic [Breast clinic on every Friday in collaboration with Department of Surgery, and Oncology clinic on every Monday in collaboration with Department of Radiotherapy, AIIMS]. 2. The evaluation of the screen positive women (Pap smear report ASCUS and above, Hr HPV positive and VIA positive) is done using colposcopy. 9. Treatment of precancerous lesions. 10. Institute conducts organizes the Hand-on training programs in cancer screening and training of state master trainers and AYUSH health care professionals. 11. Workshops: Application of Statistical Softwares in Medical Research, Protocol development & Research Paper writing and Biostatistical Analysis on SPSS and design of medical studies. 12. Training: One month hands on training course on research methodology & biostatistical analysis, and protocol & report writing. 13. The Institute provides diagnostic services related to cervical cancer screening by Pap smears, detection of high-risk HPV types by HC 2 method, colposcopy directed biopsies in screen-detected positive cases of cervical pre-cancer and cancerous lesions and also fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and effusion cytology to the patients referred from various Institutions and hospitals across Noida and Delhi viz. District Hospital, AYUSH, ESI, National Institute of Homeopathy, CGHS dispensaries across Noida. 14. The Institute has been organizing community outreach activities including cancer awareness and screening camps in various areas of Gautam Budh Nagar, U.P. 15. NICPR is actively involved with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the organization of cervical cancer awareness/screening camps at India International Trade Fair, Pragati Maidan as an annual event. 16. NICPR has developed a simple and economical visual device with a light source (AV Magnivisualizer) for easy and better visualization of the uterine cervix as well as the oral cavity. 17. NICPR is the Cancer Prevention HUB for Project ECHO (Extension for community Healthcare Outcomes). 18. Institute has developed an India specific cancer portal “India Against Cancer” (http://www.cancerindia.org.in). 19. NICPR has been designated as a WHO-FCTC Global Knowledge Hub for Prevention and Control of Smokeless Tobacco Products.
