Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Gorakhpur is one of the 26 institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of Government of India. Initially, in order to understand the problem of persistent acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in eastern Uttar Pradesh, a Field Unit of ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune was established in Gorakhpur in 2008. Government of India decided to upgrade Field Unit of NIV at Gorakhpur to full fledge independent Regional Medical Research Centre in 12 th Five Year Plan. The foundation stone of the centre was laid by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath and by the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India Shri. Jagat Prasad Nadda on 2nd September 2018. The mandate of the Centre is to carry out basic, clinical as well as operational research on dominant diseases, suggest intervention methods for reducing disease burden. It is proposed to work on few diseases as immediate priority. These are; Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), HIV and multi drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, vector borne diseases like JE, Dengue, and filariasis. Juvenile diabetes and myocarditis are diseases with probable infectious aetiologies. In addition, research to improve the child and maternal health is also a priority area of centre. Moreover, strengthen the scientific and technical expertise of state as well as local health agencies.

Service areas: ICMR-RMRC, Gorakhpur is an apex laboratories having well established advance diagnostic facilities which includes molecular, serological and cell culture assays.Other diagnostic services are available for acute encephalitis syndrome (AES)/ non-AES patients admitted at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur and other Government hospitals since 2008 in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
