The invention relates to a process for the preparation of an improved heterogeneous ion-exchange spacer. The ion-exchange spacer is used in the electrodialysis process for desalting of solution having low salt content. The heterogeneous ion-exchange(cation or anion) spacer is prepared from polymer net selected from Polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene or nylon coated with suspended fine powder of cation/anion exchange resin in polyvinyl chloride solution in tetrahydrofuran or cyclohexane.
