Executive Summary :

The project aims to develop high-performance, safe, and sustainable Na-ion battery systems as prototypes based on novel anode/cathode combinations. The importance of Na-ion battery systems stems from the widespread availability of Na-precursors worldwide, including in India, and the potential for developing an economical and sustainable electrochemical energy storage system. The anode materials will be developed by Chinese and South African partners, while the cathode materials will be developed by the Indian PI at IIT Bombay. The materials will be characterized at the respective locations, with electrochemical characterizations performed first in Na "half" cells and then Na-ion "full" cells. The project aims to make the Na-ion battery chemistry suitable for large-scale storage applications and eventual use in electric vehicles. The partners will develop novel ultra-small nanocrystals UNC, high-performance cathode materials O3- and P2-types, and optimize the as-developed cathode materials IITB and anode materials partners for full Na-ion cells.
