Fellowships & Scholarships
Keen to get back the precious scientific minds born and nurtured in the country that had gone overseas, and calling it the reversing of brain drain from the country, DBT has initiated the Ramalingaswamy Re-entry Fellowship for such biotechnologists for providing them an attractive avenue to pursue R&D in Indian institutions. DBT aims to bring up to 75 such brilliant brains back to the country every year. Selection will be made by Selection Committee specially constituted for the purpose. The awardees would be able to work in any of the recognised scientific institutions/universities in the country.
Eligibility:
i) Scientists working in any area of life sciences & biotechnology, bio-engineering, healthcare (human and animal), agriculture and veterinary biotechnology, bio-energy and allied areas can apply.
ii) The applicant must possess a Ph.D/MD degree or equivalent in life sciences/agriculture, bioinformatics or M.Tech in engineering or technology/ medicine etc. with at least 3 yrs of post-doctoral research experience in overseas laboratories. Those who have already returned to India within 1 yr but without a job are also eligible.
iii) The applicants should have a proven/outstanding track record as evident from research publications and recognitions.
iv) In case a fellow is offered permanent position, he/she can only avail either this fellowship or salary at a given time.
v) The upper age limit for applying is 45 yrs. Fellowship amount: A consolidated fellowship of Rs.1 Lakh per month with HRA of Rs.18500 p.m. consolidated is provided. Each awardee will get a research/contingency grant of Rs.10 Lakh for the 1st & 2nd year, Rs. 7.5 Lakh for the 3rd & 4th years while Rs.5 Lakh for the 5th yr. Institutional overheads of Rs.50000 p.a. is also given. The awardees would also be eligible for regular research grant through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the Govt. of India, provided that Co-PI is a regular faculty member. The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of 5 yrs. In exceptional cases, the duration may be extended by additional 2 yrs after a fresh appraisal of performance. However, during extension only fellowship and HRA will be provided with no research/contingency grant.
