The National Institute of Medical Statistics (NIMS) has a mandate to provide technical expertise on research methodology, programme evaluation, mathematical modelling, data analysis etc. Furthermore, NIMS is immensely involvement in the areas of medical statistics, bio-medical and bio-behavioral research, surveillance of communicable and non-communicable diseases, epidemiology, nutrition research, reproductive and child health and cancer research necessitated the renaming of the IRMS as NIMS in 2005. The Institute provides statistical back up for designing and analysis of disease surveillance clinical trials of drugs and vaccines, and RCH. It provided valuable inputs to the estimation of HIV infection in India. It has examined access and utilization of AYUSH in general population and population covered under CGHS. Exercising surveillance of ICMR's various research programs for ensuring statistical adequacy and validity is one the important areas from its mandate. Institute organizes training programs in the areas of research methodology in biomedical research.

- 1. India’s only institute to coordinate and standardize the collection of medical and health statistics in the country. 2. Establishment of India's first Clinical Trials Registry, in collaboration with DST and WHO. 3. Chair, National Family Health Survey. 4. Assisted NACO in HIV sentinel surveillance and estimation of HIV burden in the country. 5. Integrated Behavioural and Biological Assessment on National Highways (IBBA-NH) among truckers for HIV epidemic in the country. 6. Identified as the National Nodal Agency for the implementation of IDSP- NCD risk factor survey. 7. Completed projects from 2004-2011 (36). 8. Annual Reports of NIMS (10).
