Executive Summary :

The project proposes to develop a continuous discharge measurement system for small open channels by using ultrasonic tomography. First, an embedded circuitry will be developed for measuring transit-time between two ultrasonic transducers in underwater environment. Next, by using hydraulic principles and ultrasonic tomographic reconstruction, velocity profiles and discharge in a channel will be estimated. Laboratory experiments will be carried out to test and optimize the system’s performance. Finally, the integrated system will be tested under field conditions. It is envisaged that the developed system will be useful for inexpensive, real-time continuous discharge measurement in varied environments including small streams, irrigation canals, water distribution pipes, storm-water drains, and channels carrying industry liquid effluent.
