Executive Summary :

River bank erosion and failures cause significant economic losses worldwide, including in India. Traditionally, sand bags or geobags have been used to protect riverbanks, but recent failures highlight the need for a more robust, economic, and environmentally friendly mitigation strategy. The project proposes an engineered geobags-based sustainable mitigation strategy, developed from waste plastics and fabrics. The geobags will be optimized for better performance and will be tested experimentally and numerically in terms of geobag-geobag, geobag-water flow, and geobag-water flow-riverbank interactions. The hydrodynamic forces acting on the geobags will be evaluated, and the overall stability of the revetment structure will be evaluated using finite element analysis. Model tests will be conducted on the revetment system in a hydraulic flume, and the numerical results will be validated based on experimental data. A detailed parametric study will be conducted to optimize the geobag size, shape, and configuration. Design guidelines will be formulated for the proposed river bank protection system, and a pilot scale study will be conducted to assess its efficacy.
