Executive Summary :

Energy sector faces some serious issues in meeting the demand of energy, thus building an ever-increasing gap between the demand and supply of energy. Therefore, it creates a need to bring up some proactive plans to improve the energy efficiency of the engineering devices using different techniques of waste heat recovery. The proposed work is a rigorous theoretical and experimental endeavour to recover the waste heat associated with the coolant and exhaust gases of a compression ignition engines using the organic Rankine cycle. Firstly, the experiments will be performed to estimate the amount of waste heat associated at different loading conditions of the engine and then thermodynamic analysis will be carried-out to determine the quality of associated waste heat. Then ORC based power extraction unit will be designed and fabricated to improve the efficiency of the engine by decreasing the share of waste heat dumped to the environment. In this project, the extraction of heat from engine coolant is also targeted, therefore the design of system will be crucial to extract the low temperature heat. Moreover, the ORC components will be designed such that the cycle can operate at variable supplies of waste heat inputs. The outcome of the proposed work will create a potential installation of such energy recovery units with the engine based energy systems in various applications like agriculture, transportation and diesel generators, etc. and will result in decrease of brake-specific fuel consumption.
