Executive Summary :

India has invested on turning waste plastic into energy, but so far, the research has only focused on pyrolysis of waste plastics. This fuel can't be used in diesel engines because it has a high carbon number and contains unsaturated compounds. Hydroprocessing has been used in refineries for a long time to process crude oil. Few attempts have been made around the world to improve plastic pyrolysis oil through the hydroprocess technique. However, attempts are made towards batch hydroprocessing of used plastics and found that their chemical make-up is 95% the same as that of commercial diesel. Again, the produced fuel was tested in diesel engines, and the results showed that it was 90% the same as diesel. It is therefore proposed to move from batch processing to continuous processing at lower reaction temperatures and to achieve commercialization this technology promises to cut down on plastic pollution and provide a clean source of energy.
