Executive Summary : | The Mesozoic sequence of Kachchh is known for its rich and well-preserved fossil fauna, including mega invertebrates such as cephalopods, echinoids, corals, brachiopods, and bivalves. However, the record of ostracodes from upper Jurassic beds of Kachchh is extremely sparse, with only seven species recorded. Extensive work has been done on middle Jurassic beds, such as the Patcham and Chari formations, but no significant record exists on the foraminiferal assemblage from the upper Jurassic Katrol Formation. These micro-fossils are useful for paleoceanographic investigations as they can adapt to various settings and serve as excellent markers of past climatic and oceanographic conditions. Ostracodes have evolved rapidly and have a short life span, making them ideal tools for biostratigraphical studies and paleobiogeographical applications. The proposed research project aims to take monographic studies of micro-faunal assemblages (ostracodes and foraminifera) from the upper Jurassic Katrol Formation covering the entire Kachchh District, focusing on detailed study of ostracodes and foraminiferal assemblages. |
