Several NGOs, entrepreneurs and rural women are engaged in commercial cultivation with CSIR-NEIST's efforts. To promote mushroom cultivation, the institute also works along with NGOs, SHGs, etc. in order to reach out to large sections of people. Under societal activities, the Institute organizes training and awareness programs to encourage mushroom cultivation among marginal farmers, unemployed youth and rural women.

Brief Description

Description :

Mushroom is a nutritious food rich in protein, amino-acids, minerals, vitamin B12, vitamin D, folic acid, minerals and fibre. Also called as 'White vegetable', Mushroom is the fruiting body of fungus. It is considered ideal food for patients with hypertension, obesity and diabetics. Mushroom growing is relatively simple and can be taken up as individual home based activity or on small and large scale. Propagated through spawns, it can be cultivated in cool and humid climate. The cultivation is done on specially prepared compost made out of paddy straw and other agricultural wastes. There are two seasonal varieties. Winter varieties grow during the month of November to April and summer varieties can be cultivated in the month of June to August. Mushroom varieties maintained at CSIR-NEIST germplasm bank include Oyster Mushroom, European White Button Mushroom, Paddy Straw Mushroom and Medicinal Mushroom.
