Executive Summary :

The research aims to develop cheaper diagnostic methods for atherosclerosis using ultrasound imaging. Ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) are encapsulated microbubbles that scatter sound better than animal tissues. These microbubbles will be prepared in India and passed through tubes mimicking blood vessel stenosis configurations. The project aims to develop microbubble production technology and an imaging protocol for improved atherosclerosis imaging. Ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) are used in contrast imaging, with two categories: first-generation commercial UCAs and second-generation commercial agents. The first generation uses nitrogen surrounded by a protein or hydrophilic particulate matter, while the second generation uses sparingly soluble gas like perfluorocarbon. These agents are more stable against gas diffusion and smaller in size, potentially used for myocardial perfusion or left ventricular imaging. However, FDA-approved UCAs are not available in India. The current research aims to develop cheaper diagnostic methodology using UCAs alongside ultrasound imaging techniques. The scope of the work includes developing microbubbles in the size range of 1-8 181m suitable for both coronary circulation and LV cavity opacification. The use of sparingly soluble gas and encapsulation material will ensure these microbubbles remain in circulation for a definite period without causing damage to body tissues.
