Executive Summary : | Composites are materials made up of different integrant materials with different properties, combining to form a structure with different characteristics. Natural fiber reinforced composites are attractive due to their low cost, environmental friendliness, ease of availability, and nontoxic nature. Basalt fiber, a mineral-based fiber obtained from volcanic basalt rock, is an alternative to carbon and glass fibers due to its self-lubricating properties and dark color. Although carbon and glass fibers have higher strength, they emit more CO2 than basalt fibers. Grewia optiva, also known as Bhimal or Bihul, is a deciduous tree found in hilly regions of India. This tree provides fiber, fuel wood, fodder for animals, edible fruit, and medicinal purposes. The research proposal aims to reduce the weight of structures in hilly areas by increasing the use of local fiber-based composites, reducing transportation costs and labor charges. Utilizing local Grewia optiva fiber for the fabrication of lightweight composite sheets can generate employment opportunities in the Himalayan region and prevent migration from hilly areas. |
