Executive Summary :

Spacecraft propellant tank is a Ti6Al4V alloy construction. The Electron beam welds of thickness 3-4 mm are to be evaluated for porosity, cracks and LOF. The present NDE techniques cater to defect detection in the welds after welding, many a times there are possibility of reworks that take time and effort in choosing the location for rework as the hardware would have been un-mounted from the weld set-up. A technique in-situ the weld chamber to evaluate the weld during welding in vacuum is being developed using thermal imaging in order to detect and characterize the defects.
