Executive Summary :

Ocular microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining ocular surface homeostasis. However, there is limited knowledge about the composition and role of microbiota present on the ocular surface. Next-generation sequencing methods (NGS), particularly 16S rRNA gene-based NGS, have allowed for unprecedented analysis of microbiomes in various ecosystems. Recent studies have shown that changes in microbiota on a healthy ocular surface may predispose the eye to disease. Microbial dysbiosis has also been demonstrated in some types of ocular surface disease. However, most studies have been conducted in small cohorts, making interpretation difficult. The study aims to characterize the ocular surface microbiome in healthy subjects and in healthy subjects in the presence of external factors like contact lens and air pollution. It will also determine the ocular surface microbiome in dry eye disease, focusing on Meibomian gland dysfunction, Sjogren's syndrome, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, compared to healthy controls. The data obtained will provide a better understanding of the role of bacterial communities in ocular health and disease, potentially leading to novel treatment modalities.
