Executive Summary :

Cements prepared from the calcium phosphate are not adhesive to the surface of the bone and also lack the mechanical strength. Often, when unmodified calcium phosphate cements are added to the sites of defect, they have poor mechanical properties and are not adhesive. The present invention provides the preparation of a self-hardening calcium compounds -based osteo-adhesive composition or bone glue which can be used in various regenerative orthopedic applications. The invention pertains to the compounds of calcium modified with non-collagenous proteins, or their derivatives, for the applications as a bone filler. The term "glue" signifies that the invention will have adhesive characteristics along with appropriate mechanical properties. The present invention also provides an artificial bone substitute in the form of an adhesive cement, which will adhere bone fragments to each other (and adhere bone fragments to implants), provide mechanical strength at the defect site, will aid in reduction of fracture, potentially reduce the number of metal implants needed and also reduce the time to load bearing for patients. The present invention also provides a novel mechanically competent osteo-adhesive composition or glue which could repair the bone defects as well as provide support to the implants. The present invention provides a self-setting and mechanically competent osteo-adhesive material. The present study investigates the incorporation of different compounds and additives to the apatite cements for its conversion to the potential bone adhesives. The present invention will aid in fracture reduction by stabilizing comminuted fractures and stabilization of implants. The present osteo-adhesive or bone glue composition finds a potential use in case of comminuted fractures. This will allow to stabilize implants.
