Air Traffic Controller Radar

The technology of Surveillance Radars developed by LRDE can be adapted for use as effective Radar for Air Traffic Control (ATC) at civilian and military Airports. Air Traffic Control Radars are surveillance radars of medium range and above which are used to support smooth and safe control and direction of air traffic around them. The Air Traffic Control Radars normally are of static installation with antenna mounted on a tower or building and the processing can be carried out in electronic equipments kept in building. The air situation picture will be shown on multiple consoles running different software modules. This radar is deployed against friendly and cooperative targets flying in surrounding air space for ensuring effective utilization of air space. Safe separation distance between aircrafts, etc. Surveillance Radars developed by LRDE namely Indra (Pulse Compression ) and 3D Central Acquisition Radar can be directly adapted to meet such requirements. The technologies involved are the same, as those required by surveillance radars with additional emphasis on extensive human machine interface (HMI) through modem console units. These can be developed using only commercial of the shelf (COTS) solution even without the ruggedisation required for military grade units. The constituent technology elements and expertise available at LRDE can be tapped by the industry in the area of Air Traffic Control Radars.
