Development of Ammonia based Flexible Heat pipe for Space Applications

Area: Astronomy & Space Sciences

Innovator: Dr. Suresh S, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu

Funding agency: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)

Benefits: The project being undertaken by ISRO in collaboration with academia is directly or indirectly beneficial to the society.

Focus Area: Thermal System

Co-PI: Shri Vivek Kumar Singh, Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Executive Summary: Heat pipes are used widely in spacecraft thermal managment system. But, conventaional metallic rigid heat pipe have limitations and pose operational difficulties like transporation and installation in spacecraft. To overcome this, the project envisaged to develop a Full - length Flexible Heat Pipe (FFHP) with ammonina as working fluid for operating teamerature range 233 K to 333 K for space applications. The project also aims to fabricate the wick strucuture using additive manufacturing for flexible heat pipes.
