UAV – Aided Weather Radar Calibration

Area: Astronomy & Space Sciences

Innovator: Dr. Lakshi Prosad Roy, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, Odisha

Funding agency: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)

Benefits: The project being undertaken by ISRO in collaboration with academia is directly or indirectly beneficial to the society.

Focus Area: Radar Calibration

Co-PI: Dr. V. K. Anandan, ISTRAC, ISRO, Benglauru, Karnataka

Executive Summary: The objective of this project is to develop a stand -alone portable, light weight and reliable calibration system for RADAR. For this purpose, UAV is being used as the platform to carry a metal sphere of known reflectivity as calibrator. The external RADAR calibration carried out in this project will ensure Antenna pointing accuaracy calibration, antenna pattern retrieval in Azimuth and Elevation planes, establishing the RADAR constant for weather RADAR and element level Phase calibration of the large digital array RADAR.
