IN248993: A process for the preparation antioxidant activity rich extracts of fruits of Rivina humilis L.

Rivina humilis L. belongs to Phytoloccaceae, a pokeweed family. The fruits are eaten by Rio-grande turkeys, chachalacas morning doves, white winged doves and numerous species of passerine birds. Fruit yields a red dye. In view of this an experimental study was taken up to study whether any bioactive compounds are available as it is being eaten fondly by birds as a winter food and also by bees. The ripened fruit of Rivina humilis L., were initially made into paste in mixer and then extracted with methanol and water (aqueous extract) were collected and the antioxidant activity of these fractions in methanol were determined by known methods. The methanol extracts of Rivina humilis fruits showed 81% antioxidant activity at 200 ppm concentration.
