IN290187: An improved process for the production of 1,2-propanediol from glycerol over solid catalysts without addition of external hydrogen

The invention provides an improved process for the production of 1,2-propanediol from glycerol by aqueous phase reforming of glycerol. The process provides a direct and single step hydrogenolysis of glycerol without adding additional H2 over Pt-supported on hydrotalcite catalyst. The hydrotalcite catalyst contains Al2O3 and MgO in a ratio of 80:20 to 60:40. The process provides a glycerol conversion upto 100% and selectivity for 1,2-propanediol of up to 68%.
