IN355994: A method for recovery of copper from spent lithium ion batteries

The invention provides a process to synthesise ultrapure copper powder from spent lithium ion batteries comprising ultrasonic treatment of anode material generated by dismantling of spent lithium ion batteries. The process involves pneumatic casting by applying pneumatic pressure of 3 to 5 bar of same as anode feed for production of electrolytic copper powder in an electrolytic cell by passing the current in the range of 0.1 to 5.0 A and voltage of 0.05 to 2.0V and using electrolyte containing 50 to 250 g/L (w/v) sulphuric acid with temperature of the electrolyte bath between 40 to 70°C during electrolysis. This invention is useful for direct production of electrolytic grade copper metal as powder suitable for electrical, electronics and powder metallurgical industry.
