IN361781: A process for the preparation of a collagenous biomaterial for medical applications

Disclosed is a process for the preparation of a biomaterial from bovine fore-stomach tissues employing an alkali-mediated disruption of the epithelial layer leading to solubilization of cellular components. Initially the starting material is conditioned at pH 9-12 and later degreased using 50-95% of organic solvents. The degreased tissue is subjected to 0.2% enzymatic proteolysis and subsequently disinfected and air-dried. The resulting collagen is of purer form and affords a larger surface area with superior physical as well as biological properties without causing any immunological reactions on application. This biomaterial at the target site would enhance cell proliferation and vascularization. The invention is envisaged to have application for wound dressings, tissue engineering, tissue regeneration and drug delivery.
