IN362905: A biomimetic process for the preparation of magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles

The invention relates to the biomimetic synthesis of nano-magnetic hydroxyapatite with particle size ranging from 5-20nm. The method involves using the supramolecular matrix consisting of poly (vinyl) alcohol for the in situ synthesis of magnetic hydroxyapatite. The use of an organic matrix leads to the constrained precipitation of these magnetic hydroxyapatite at site-specific sites that exercise a high degree of control over nucleation and growth of the prepared product and results in an optimum degree of crystallinity required for orthopedic applications. The polymer matrix used plays a key role. in controlling the particle size, morphology and the precipitation process. These belong to a class of advanced functional materials which can be functionalized further very easily and which will be instrumental in fabricating composites with multifunctional use for both biomedical and engineering applications. The material of present invention has biocompatibility and bioactivity comparable to normal hydroxyapatlte.
