The present invention relates to a simple, economical and short synthesis for the class of compounds chemically belonging to amino acrylic acids of general formula I exhibiting both antibacterial and anti-plasmodium (anti-malarial) activity, in good yield and purity. Process for the preparation of said compound comprising heating amine (A) and pantolactone or substituted pantolactone (B) in a solvent selected from cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, xylene, dipheny!ether; anisole, dioxane, etc. at a temperature in the range of 110-150°C for about 24 hrs followed by further raising the temperature of the mixture to a temperature in the range of 200-230°C for period in the range of 15 to 25min followed by cooling the crude reaction mixture to room temperature to obtain compound of general Formula I.
