Executive Summary : | Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder characterized by altered perceptions, hearing voices, feeling persecuted, and suicidal thoughts. It manifests in positive symptoms like delusions and hallucinations, but negative symptoms include lack of motivation, reduced spontaneous speech, and social withdrawal. Impaired cognitive function and memory difficulties are also significant symptoms. The disease impacts quality of life, well-being, and social and occupational function, creating a significant socio-economic burden. The incidence varies between cultures, with genetic and environmental factors contributing to the prevalence. Drug treatment for schizophrenia is often long-term, and psycho-pharmaceutics are effective in improving positive symptoms. Yoga, a traditional Indian practice, has been shown to relieve symptoms and improve well-being in patients with schizophrenia. Yoga can help maintain balance and harmony in the body, thoughts, and emotions, and reduce stress and anxiety. Further research is needed to develop a user-friendly package of yogic exercises for this condition. |
