Executive Summary :

The cattle industry has become a significant driver of agricultural expansion in emerging nations like India, leading to increased focus on neoplasia in veterinarians. The true incidence or prevalence of domestic animal cancer is unknown, but 8.73% of cattle live to more than 8 years. There are several surveillance systems in various countries for neoplasms study, but in India, no such system exists. This lack of systemic study and absence of an Animal Cancer Registry contribute to the unclear scenario of cancer incidences in India. The present study in Jammu aims to provide information on the occurrence and pathobiology of spontaneous neoplasms in bovines. This demographic data will be documented and discussed with field veterinarians and animal farmers to avoid indiscriminate therapeutic protocols for pathological conditions like cysts, abscesses, haematomas, and chronic inflammatory conditions. Biological parameter markers, such as PCNA, Bcl-2, P53, Vimentin, cytokeratin, EGF, and VEGF, have a crucial role in prognosis and prompt diagnosis. These markers can be evaluated qualitatively or quantitatively using molecular, chemical, or immunological techniques. The study will quantify these markers using gene expression profiling and immunohistochemistry. The results will be discussed with the University and Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir to establish an Animal Neoplasm Registry to facilitate continuous monitoring of neoplasm problems in animals.
