Executive Summary :

This project proposal targets to address the present state and future changes of small glaciers in the Himalayan Range and quantify the impacts of their retreat on local to regional hydrology. It aims at understanding the climate change response of small glaciers- a so far strongly understudied component of the cryosphere in the Himalayas-based on detailed in situ observations, satellite remote sensing and glaciological modelling. Furthermore, the project will propose a novel coupling of detailed high-resolution glacier models with hydrological models operating at the catchment scale in order to investigate the relevance of small glaceirs to hydrology. The results of future changes in streamflow will be shared at the community level by developing a smartphone application to convey local changes to the Indian Population.
