Executive Summary :

Deployable space structures are incredibly significant in space applictations. The project aimed at investigating a lenticular shaped composite deployable structure numerically and experimentally. The stored strain energy due to large deformation results in an uncontrolled deployment and the same will be studied using FEM and experiments. The numerical work will be carried out employing LS-DYNA software (explicit dynamics). The expected results from LS-DYNA on folding analysis and deployment dynamics including estimations of strain energy at various intervals of deployment times of the lenticular deployable composite boom will be presented. The thin lenticular boom prototypes are planned to be manufactured using carbon fiber and epoxy through vacuum assisted technique to have minimum thickness and uniformity.
