Executive Summary :

sVNIT surat, located in surat city, Gujarat, is a hub of textile industries, known as the silk city or synthetic capital of India. Around 90% of polyester used in India comes from surat alone. The number of Water Jet Looms Machines is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years, as textile industries in the city and the country lack adequate effluent treatment systems to achieve zero liquid discharge (ZLD) as per government norms. The source of water for textile industries in land-locked regions is groundwater through bore wells, which are already high due to the city's proximity to the seashore. After primary treatment in Reverse Osmosis (RO), the rejected RO water is discharged into sewer lines, further increasing the TDs of groundwater. To comply with norms, these industries often rely on Electrical Evaporator Units, which are not affordable from an economic point of view and not a good choice from thermodynamic second law efficiency point of view. The proposed research work involves humidification, dehumidification, desalination, and membrane distillation processes for recovering water from RO reject. Energy-efficient devices such as heat pumps assisted by solar energy for heating water and air, and a DC compressor that can feed some of the power generated by solar PV to the heat pump system compressor are proposed. Field studies will be conducted to collect samples of RO reject water from different zones of the textile industrial area, and mathematical modeling and simulation will be carried out to optimize system components. Adapting these systems on larger scale will result in substantial energy conservation and open up new dimensions to the textile industry.
