Executive Summary : | The Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Meghna GBM basin, inhabited by 700 million people, is facing significant water-related hazards due to melting glaciers, hydropower reservoirs, and precipitation variability. This project aims to develop a next-generation integrated modeling chain to assess climate impacts on water-hazards in the region. The project includes developing new observational analysis methods, downscaling techniques, land surface modeling, and machine learning applications. Earth System models provide information at large spatial resolution, which is inadequate for understanding hydrological impacts at local scales, especially with varied topography in the GBM. Statistical and machine learning-based approaches will be implemented to bias correct and disaggregate climate model outputs, focusing on representing metrics important for hydrology such as spatial scaling characteristics and extremes. The project aims to uncover new understanding and representation of the vulnerability of water resources to land and atmospheric drivers, reducing the usability gap between scientists and users in the region. |
