Executive Summary :

Bacterial small RNAs (sRNAs) play a crucial role in gene expression regulation. A novel sRNA, RyjB, is found in all growth phases of Escherichia coli and is an acid stress inducible sRNA. Its expression is regulated by PhoP. RyjB is 100% conserved in pathogens like Salmonella and Shigella sp., which cause common human diseases. Studying RyjB in E. coli will help understand its function in pathogenic infections. Preliminary studies found that RyjB promotes cell survival at low pH, and the global stress regulator RpoS is unnecessary for RyjB expression under normal or stress conditions. Hfq is also nonessential for RyjB.
