Executive Summary :

In modern industrial systems, condition monitoring is essential for maintaining optimal process operation. Condition monitoring relies on real-time analysis and correlation of various sensor data, often with the need for preprocessing and feature extraction. For such complex signal analysis tasks, machine learning methods can be helpful. However, machine learning has problems with the detection of new operational states that had not appeared before and, thus, were not included in the training of the models. As machine learning typically requires extensive computation that is done on central servers, its application in complex distributed industrial systems becomes difficult. The scientific question addressed in this project is to investigate systems and methods for edge-based condition monitoring and novelty detection. The objective is to provide a generic and computationally efficient platform that distributes real-time condition monitoring functionality and brings it closer to the processes to be monitored. As such devices are resource-constrained and not capable of performing computationally extensive tasks, lightweight machine learning models are deployed at the edge devices for monitoring, analysis, and anomaly detection and embedded in an Internet of Things IoT infrastructure. The focus of the research activities will be on the monitoring of industrial machines such as electric motors. Existing research activities at both host institutions provide the necessary background and will benefit from mutual research visits.
