Executive Summary :

Optoelectronic devices play a crucial role in communication and data transfer, with the integration of electronic and photonic components revolutionizing the device industry. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) contain optical components essential for signal transduction, such as waveguides, resonators, modulators, splitters, and amplifiers. However, most PICs are made of silicon-based materials, which can be passive and rigid. To overcome these bottlenecks, this proposal introduces the use of electronically and mechanically different organic crystals to construct bandwidth-tuneable PICs. Organic crystals are easily synthesized in the laboratory, lightweight, have wavelength tunability, and are easy to process and fabricate. They can be used as optical waveguides, cavities, modulators, splitters, and more. Wavelength tunability allows the entire visible light region to be used to transduce signals. Organic crystals also show distinct mechanical flexibility, making them ideal for flexible device construction. Nano welding is a method for creating permanent functional devices, allowing point-specific junctions to be welded without damaging the device. Localized photothermal heating melts specific points, creating permanent joints in circuits. Multi-emission organic crystals can be integrated in a single platform, transporting distinct signals. Some crystals can also function as long pass filters, absorbing lower wavelengths and allowing longer wavelength signals to be transported to the detector. Overall, there is a significant demand for bandwidth-tuneable PICs with multifunctional device applications.
