Executive Summary :

India and the world are transitioning towards greener mobility solutions to reduce carbon emissions and become carbon neutral. Electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (EVs) offer multiple advantages over existing IC engine vehicles, including lower carbon emissions and low running costs. However, the main hurdle to EV mainstreaming is the high cost of ownership, particularly in India, where consumers often opt for cheaper options due to high technology costs and import of components. The project aims to make electric vehicles affordable and become import-independent by developing low-cost motor and controllers indigenously. The objectives include developing an indigenous high-performance 40 kW PMSM product for automotive applications, demonstrating a state-of-the-art Vector-based controller product, delivering an integrated motor drive E-drive product, developing a technology development platform, generating patents on indigenously developed PMSM drive products and platforms, and developing a platform for researchers and industrial professionals to perform extensive research in electric vehicle drives design and development. The proposed hybrid permanent magnet synchronous motor design reduces the weight of the permanent magnet used in the drive, a key cost factor.
