Executive Summary :

This project explores the potential of new multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous catalysts for one-pot multistep organic reactions. MOFs are highly crystalline and can be synthesized using metal ions acting as nodes and organic linkers. They have several advantages, including structural diversity, rational design, and the incorporation of multiple functionalities through metals and organic moieties. This multifunctional nature is particularly beneficial for synergistic or one-pot tandem/cascade/domino catalysis. To produce multifunctional MOFs, the mixed linker strategy is proposed, which maximizes the chances of incorporating different functional groups into the MOFs. The project also aims to explore the catalytic performance of layered nano MOFs, which have the rich potential of exhibiting good catalytic ability. The challenge today is to build a pollution-free environment due to industrialization, with a significant portion of pollution generated by chemicals and related industries. The use of catalysts can promote green technology and reduce energy consumption, and they are used in various industries, such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, fertilizers, food, and petrochemicals. The proposal discusses the potential of exploiting new bifunctional MOFs for one-pot multistep tandem and multicomponent reactions, which are valuable for maximizing atom economy, cutting down chemical waste, reducing energy consumption, and simplifying reactions. The aim is to carry out organic reactions using green solvents or in solvent-free conditions, following the principles of green chemistry and achieving a more sustainable world.
