Executive Summary :

safety critical systems (sCs) are widely used in many applications such as aerospace, nuclear power plant, medical systems, transportation systems, etc. The failure of such systems can lead to catastrophic disasters such as destruction of important utility or even loss of human life. Therefore, such systems do have a high reliability target. These systems contain heterogeneous hardware, software and firmware components. The reliability of system is a function of reliability of all its constituent components. Hardware reliability quantification methodology is well established; however, reliability of software depends on its failure characteristics and hence there are several software reliability quantification models. Furthermore, the traditional models are purely based on statistics. However, due to the change in the dynamics of the system, there is a need to accommodate such dynamics in the reliability quantification model. The proposed work aims to device a framework to model the sCs using stochastic modelling and then derive state equations of the system to quantify the overall reliability of the system with much accuracy.
