Executive Summary : | The north eastern plain and north Bihar, including Gorakhpur, are vulnerable agro-climatic regions with a large proportion of small and marginal farmers. Science and Technology-driven support is crucial for doubling income and strengthening dependent livelihoods. Three components include crop intensification, reducing input costs, and early forecasting climate services. Community-led ST processes, such as Land-Lab-Land, are proposed to enhance resource efficiency and climate resilience in flood-affected areas. Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group and DST-Mahamana Centre of Excellence in Climate Change Research are proposing a five-year project to enhance resource efficiency in small farm-based livelihoods in flood-prone areas of eastern Uttar Pradesh and North Bihar. The project aims to evolve techniques and methods for enhancing resource efficiency, develop scientific methods for enhancing village wetlands' efficiency, and empower farmers and community-based organizations (CSOs) for the dissemination of ST-enabled techniques and innovations. The project will involve a baseline survey, assessing livelihood patterns, and mapping natural ecosystem services. The proposed interventions aim to enhance income, reduce losses, and lower input costs, while also improving the efficiency of wetlands and enhancing resilience capacity. |
